Are snakes good pets

Almost everyone loves buying cute and small mammals like cats and dogs, to keep them as pets. However, another type of animal that makes very good pets is reptiles. Although they are largely misunderstood by the people in our society. Nevertheless, in this article, we aim to clarify that misconception, by discussing snakes, and how they are a good pet (although maybe not as cute).

Our clarification will exist in two parts:

  • Those particular reasons snakes become beloved by their owners.
  • Some particular domains where they can be actually better than other pets.

Top Reasons Snakes are Good Pets:

The first part of our discussion is the reasons snakes are good pets. Well, if you have to brainstorm, you will find many of them given that you have owned a snake in the past. But if you haven’t, it would be difficult for you to get your head around them. For that reason, we shall give you the reasons, which are as follows:

They are quiet throughout the day

Snakes are generally quiet animals. The most they can do is hiss, and they do it usually at times when they feel threatened.

However, if you take care of them, things wouldn’t come to that. Moreover, their physical movements do not make as many sounds or create as much chaos either. If you are someone that loves peace and quiet, and at the same time also loves animals, snakes would be an ideal pet for you.

They do not many any mess

Snakes do not make as much mess if you compare them to the general mess that is expected of pets. The most they do is defecate, which is pretty occasional, and they might shed their skin according to their routines.

  • Nevertheless, this mess is quite easy to clean, and it needs to be done quite less (i.e., occasionally).
  • If you are someone that lacks the time and energy to clean your house or clean after an animal, this would give you another reason to have snakes.

They require considerably less maintenance

Although you need to keep them in a very controlled environment and shower them with love, care, and affection. Snakes do not require as much care or “maintenance”.

  • By maintenance, we mean a constant watch over the animal. Where you have to potty train them, feed them again and again, and train them to learn good habits.
  • With snakes, you will not have to take a lot of pain.

They can even cheer you up when you’re down

The normal image of snakes is a dangerous one. Where they are seen as animals that kill and devour other animals and inject their venom into them needlessly.

  • Well, this is a true image if you are considering the wild. However, some breeds of snakes that have been trained well will not cause such a problem.
  • Rather, they will prove to be a source of pleasure when you are down. As they are known for providing “emotional support” to their owners.

How Snakes can be better than other pets?

The second part of our discussion would be focused on key aspects that give snakes an edge as a pet over other types of animals. Intrinsically, this section aims to facilitate the discussion on how snakes are good pets. So you can consider it an extension of the previous section. Nevertheless, the key aspects are discussed below:

Keeping them is not costly like other animals

We have discussed before that they need a well-controlled environment.

  • However, one should note that the expenses are one-time spending, after which you will not have to worry about spending too much.
  • Certain animals require a lot of spending on them, so those are not a viable option for many. However, snakes can be a good option for a greater number of people.

They will not turn your life upside down

If a snake is well-trained, well-fed, and given adequate affection, it will be a source of pleasure for you. Unlike many other animals, they will not turn your life into hell and will be a good option for you.

  • Though you should note that this is only the case if you have done everything that must be done to look after a snake.
  • If you lack somewhere, they could be rather violent and dangerous. Hence, it is recommended to look after them through proper and professional means.

They do not require regular “walks”

Another plus point for you here is that you do not need to take the snake for walks all the time. You can leave them in their environment or in the home and they will be just fine. However, if we consider dogs and cats, they need a lot of physical activity, and it is a must for people to take them out on regular walks. Hence, people that do not have much spare time in their life can keep them as pets.

When is it ideal to have snakes as pets?

While all of what is discussed above is true, you have to understand one key element. Not everyone can or should keep snakes as pets. This animal is typically a predator, and in history, they have eaten a lot of humans. What they need is proper care and attention, and probably only a professional can attain that. Thus, if you have the means to own a snake, only then you should go for it. You may have to do a lot of searching for a vet that is knowledgeable in snakes because not many out there are.

If you can attain all this, then you are good to have a snake. However, you should consider not buying a snake otherwise, because there is always a potential threat to yourself and your loved ones.

Final Thoughts

As long as you look at the precautions, circumstances, and give the snake appropriate training, they can be an ideal pet for you depending upon your circumstances. That being said, you should always consider buying them, because it would be an experience worth remembering.
